Aim

To provide learners with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Be able to provide sports massage therapy to a range of clients who have dysfunctional tissue, without acute/post acute injuries or underlying pathological conditions
  • Be able to assess clients and construct a Sports Massage treatment plan
  • Understand the principles of soft tissue dysfunction
  • Understand how to determine the appropriate techniques for specific clients
  • Apply a range of sports massage techniques and understand their effects on the body

Progression

Learners may wish to add to their portfolio of  skills by completing the following:

Entry Requirements

Learners must hold one of the following (or equivalent):

  • L3 Diploma in Personal Training
  • L3 Certificate in Personal Training
  • L3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Matwork
  • L4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy
  • L4 Strength and Conditioning
  • The course requires physical exertion, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary
  • There is an element of communication involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at Level 2.

Please note that 16-18 year olds may need to be surpervised in the workplace once they have achieved the qualification.

Qualification Structure

This qualification comprises of  3 mandatory units:

  • Unit 1 –    Anatomy and physiology for human movement J/617/2169
  • Unit 2 – Assessing client posture and identifying specific joint movement and dysfunctionA/617/2170
  • Unit 3 –  Developing corrective exercise strategies for managing posture and movement dysfunctionF/617/2171 

Successful completion of all three mandatory units is necessary to achieve  the full qualification.
