Aim

The aim of this qualification is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to:

  • design and adapt programmes to meet the needs of older adults
  • understand the effects of ageing on the UK population
  • understand the physiological and biomechanical changes associated with ageing and their implications for physical activity
  • understand the medical conditions commonly associated with old age and their implications for physical activity
  • understand the key considerations for older adults participating in physical activity
  • understand the communication skills required to engage with older adults

Entry Requirements

Learners must hold a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing or one of the qualifications listed below:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training.
  • Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral.
  • Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Yoga.
  • Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Matwork.

The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary.

There is an element of communication, (discussion, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basics skills in communication pitched at level 2.

  • Adults (aged 16+) wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as a Sports Coach or Fitness Instructor
  • Personal Trainers
  • Yoga Teachers
  • Pilates Teachers
  • Exercise Referral Instructors

Please note that 16-18 year olds may need to be surpervised in the workplace once they have achieved the qualification.

Qualification Structure

This qualification comprises of 2 units:

  • Unit 1 – Physical activity and health considerations for the older adult
  • Unit 2 – Designing and adapting exercise programmes for the older adult

Successful completion of the two units is necessary to achieve the full qualification.
