Aim

Learners will gain the relevant knowledge of anatomy and physiology and nutrition for exercise, health and fitness, lifestyle and medical factors that affect wellbeing and the legal and professional requirements for personal training.

Learners will acquire the skills to communicate effectively with clients and to perform client consultations to encourage healthy lifestyle behaviours and provide strategies for change.

Learners will gain the skills needed to plan and conduct physical activity sessions with different types of clients in a variety of environments with a range of resources.

Learners will be able to manage, evaluate and improve own performance and set up and manage a personal training business on a self-employed basis if they wish to.

  • Level 4 Certificate in Physical Activity and Weight Management for Obese and Diabetic Clients
  • Level 4 Certificate in Physical Activity and Lifestyle Strategies for Managing Low Back Pain

Successful achievement of this qualification will provide entry to the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) as an affiliate member (exercise and fitness).

Entry Requirements

A suitable Level 2 Qualification in Gym Instructing

The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary.

There is an element of communication, (discussion, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basics skills in communication pitched at level 2.

Target Learners

Adults (aged 16+) wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as a personal trainer

Gym Instructors wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as personal trainers

Individuals who already hold a gym instructor qualification, wishing to become self employed running their own personal training business.

Please note that 16-18 year olds may need to be surpervised in the workplace once they have achieved the qualification.

Qualification Structure

This qualification comprises of 6 units:

  • Unit 1 – Applied Anatomy & Physiology for Exercise, Health and Fitness
  • Unit 2 – The Principles of Nutrition and their application to Exercise and Health
  • Unit 3 – Understanding Lifestyle, Health, Wellbeing and Common Medical Conditions
  • Unit 4 – Encouraging Positive Health and Fitness Behaviours in Clients.
  • Unit 5 – Programme Design and Delivery for Personal Training
  • Unit 6 – Professionalism and business Acumen formPersonal Trainers

Successful completion of all six units is necessary to achieve the full qualification.

Coursework/Project, Multiple Choice Examination, Portfolio of Evidence, Practical Demonstration/Assignments/Case Study, Assessment
