Aim

This Level 3 Award is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to be able to design and adapt programmes to meet the needs of disabled people.

The Units fully incorporate the “Principles for Development and Assessment of Special Populations Qualifications” agreed in February 2012 and adhere to the disabled client special population-specific criteria.

This qualification will entitle learners to gain the additional category “disability” on REPS.

  • Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy
  • Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Personal Training
  • Level 4 Certificate in Physical Activity and Weight Management for Obese and Diabetic Clients
  • Level 4 Certificate in Physical Activity and Lifestyle Strategies for Managing Low Back Pain

Entry Requirements

Learners must either hold a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gy, Aqua or Exercise to Music) or equivalent including qualifications which give entry to the REPS Physical Activity Advisor category or one of the following:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training
  • Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Matwork
  • Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Yoga

There is an element of communication, (discussion, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basics skills in communication pitched at Level 2.

Target Learners

  • Adults (aged 16+) wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as a Sports Coach or Fitness Instructor
  • Personal Trainers
  • Yoga Teachers
  • Pilates Teachers
  • Exercise Referral Instructors

Please note that 16-18 year olds may need to be supervised in the workplace once they have achieved the qualification.

Qualification Structure

This qualification comprises of 2 Mandatory units:

  • Unit 1 – Physical Activity and Health considerations for disabled people.
  • Unit 2 – Designing and Adapting Exercise Programmes for Disabled Clients.

Successful completion of both mandatory units is necessary to achieve the full qualification.
