Aim

To provide learners with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Be able to provide sports massage therapy to a range of clients who have dysfunctional tissue, without acute/post acute injuries or underlying pathological conditions
  • Be able to assess clients and construct a Sports Massage treatment plan
  • Understand the principles of soft tissue dysfunction
  • Understand how to determine the appropriate techniques for specific clients
  • Apply a range of sports massage techniques and understand their effects on the body

Progression

Learners may wish to add to their portfolio of therapy skills by completing the following:

  • Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy
  • Level 4 Certificate in Postural Assessment and Corrective Exercise

Entry Requirements

  • There are no specific entry Requirements
  • The course requires physical exertion, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary
  • There is an element of communication involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at Level 2.

Target Learners

  • Adults (aged 16+) wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as a Sports Coach or Fitness Instructor
  • Personal Trainers
  • Yoga Teachers
  • Pilates Teachers
  • Exercise Referral Instructors

Please note that 16-18 year olds may need to be surpervised in the workplace once they have achieved the qualification.

Qualification Structure

This qualification comprises of  5 mandatory units:

  • Unit 1 –   Anatomy and physiology for sports massage J/506/7220
  • Unit 2 – Principles of health and fitness R/506/7222
  • Unit 3 – Understand the principles of soft tissue dysfunction Y/506/7223
  • Unit 4 – Professional practice in sports massage D/506/7224
  • Unit 5 – Sports massage treatments T/506/7228

Successful completion of all five mandatory units is necessary to achieve  the full qualification.

Assessment

Worksheets, Externally Set Multiple choice question paper, Client Record card/ treatment plan, Interview and Three Summative Observed Treatment  Sessions, Self evaluation.
