Aim

To provide learners with the skills and knowledge to enable them to be professionally competent to design, plan and deliver safe and effective Pilates classes

Progression

Learners may wish to add to their portfolio of skills by completing the following:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Children)
  • Level 3 Award In Designing Exercise Programmes for Older Adults
  • Level 3 Award in Designing Pre and Post Natal Exercise Programmes
  • Level 3 Award In Designing Exercise Programmes for Disabled Clients
  • Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Yoga
  • Level 3 Diploma In Exercise Referral
  • Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy
  • Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy
  • Level 4 Certificate in Physical Activity and Weight Management for Obese and Diabetic Clients
  • Level 4 Certificate in Physical Activity and Lifestyle Strategies for Managing Low Back Pain

Entry Requirements

Experience of participating in pilates classes is desirable

The course requires physical exertion, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary

There is an element of communication involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at Level 2

Target Learners

  • Adults (aged 16+) wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as a Sports Coach or Fitness Instructor
  • Personal Trainers
  • Yoga Teachers
  • Pilates Teachers
  • Exercise Referral Instructors

Please note that 16-18 year olds may need to be surpervised in the workplace once they have achieved the qualification.

Qualification Structure

This qualification comprises of 7 units:

  • Unit 1 – Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise and Health
  • Unit 2 – Know how to support clients who take part in physical activity
  • Unit 3 – Health safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment
  • Unit 4 – Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health
  • Unit 5 – Principles of Pilates Matwork
  • Unit 6 – Programming Pilates Matwork
  • Unit 7 – Instructing Pilates Matwork

Successful completion of all seven mandatory units is necessary to achieve the full qualification.

Additional Unit

This does not form part of the mandatory units

  • Unit 8 – Applying the principles of nutrition to a physical activity programme

Assessment

Worksheets, Externally Set Multiple choice question papers, Client Interview and Case Study, Summative Observed Sessions, self evaluation.
